Botanical Aquarium

Botanical is a fancy way of saying beneficial properties usually healing medicinal qualities. So our leaves Indian Almond leaves otherwise known as catappa leaves would fall into that category. As they definitely have some healing properties.

What Are The Origines Of These Leaves

Catappa Tree

Let us start at the beginning the Indian almond leaf or the catappa leaf comes from the Terminalia catappa tree. This tree originated in Asia and Oceania but now grows all over tropical and subtropical areas all around the world.

It is believed that the seeds taste like almonds hence the name. These leaves are used in teas and have health benefits for us too.

Why These Leaves Are Important For Aquariums

For starters, it looks amazing and gives your home tank the look of a wild blackwater river. One that our neon tetras come from. The leaf litter ( the leaves we put in our tanks) acts as a natural canopy protecting the fish and other life we may have in our aquariums. Once the leaves sink into the tank they act as a hiding spot sleeping area and or spawning area for our fish.

More on spawning later.

Anti Bacterial Properties

That’s right these leaves the ketapang leaf has anti-bacterial properties. flavonoids, like kaempferol and quercetin, are released into the water acting as a natural deterrent against bacteria. Amazing hay these leaves protect themselves from certain bacteria and insects from eating them.

Anti Fungal Properties

As well as anti-bacterial this leaf also has anti-fungal properties. Saponins are also leached into the water by this magical leaf which acts as a barrier so to speak. Helping against most fungal issues.

Catappa Leaves Affective Against Parasites

Also from birth, I know crazy once the leaf starts to break down the good bacteria start growing and act as infusoria. Allowing baby fry to feed.

Colorful Fish

Correct again folks. These marvelous leaves when eaten will improve the color of your fish. Neon tetras are gonna pop with color but also other fish will look amazing too. Those tannins will stain the water so the fish are going to think they are in their natural environment. Making them happy healthy and stress-free.

Breeding Fry

Remember earlier I said we would return to the spawning of our fish? Well yep, here we are the tannins released by these wonderful leaves allow for the perfect water conditions for our neon tetra and other fish to spawn.

Softening The Waters & Lowering Ph

Tannins released by the Indian Almond Leaves have the awesome ability to soften the water and lowering Ph over time. Making it perfect for our little neon tetras to spawn it also gives a place for the eggs to be scattered on.

Darker Waters

As the water has been slightly stained by the tannins it is now perfect for hatching the eggs as they are very sensitive to light and need darker conditions. Also, we’ve given them the perfect food in the leaves. Might have to move or separate the parents though as they will deffo eat the eggs and or fry as soon as they can.

Feeding Plants

As these leaves decompose and break down the nutrients are used by plants and other flora. Helping them to grow and giving them much-needed minerals.
