Having an amazing aquarium is what we all strive for. We spend plenty of time on our fish tanks and would love for them to not be so loud. Why is my fish tank so noisy can fish tanks be quiet!.
How loud are fish tanks do fish tanks make noise?.
Fish tanks don’t make noise but the equipment in them certainly can. Heaters filter waterfalls water pumps all make some noise. Make sure all heaters pump filters are underwater and the lid/hood is on properly also a vibration mat these tips will help keep the noise to a minimum.
As we can see fish tanks are not the culprit but the equipment may well be let’s have a more in-depth look shall we?
Why Are Fish Tanks Noisy
A few of the main culprits for noisy tanks. Are fish tank filters? Making a gurgling noise or the aquariums filter impeller noise.
Filters are notorious for making noise but they can be dealt with the same goes for water pumps and waterfalls.
There could be some rattling from any piece of equipment. With some simple fault-finding. This can be eradicated usually it’s metal rubbing against plastic or the glass of the tank.
With some simple suction cups and or rubber grips this vibration, the noise is gone.
As the picture above shows rubber protects the filter from rubbing/touching the glass. Reducing vibration and overall noise.
As we’ve learned the tank is not necessarily the problem but the equipment we will look into this in more detail later!.
Does Noise Affect Fish
Most normal noises will not affect fish. There are so many examples of fish lounging by heaters and filters even pumps etcetera.
Noises from outside the tank shouting smacking the tank will, however, stress fish. Of course, this indeed affects all fish.
Does Filter Noise Affect Fish
Unless the filter has come away and is forcing water all over the place. Or the motor is half in half out of the water I suspect more the force of water and the now choppy conditions. Rather than noise being the problem in this scenario.
How To Make Fish Tanks Quieter
- Feel the filter inlet/outlet for sound/noise
- look for debris in hoses.
- Lube the impeller to quiet the filter.
- Adjust the hoses and the return pump line.
- Adjust the water flow and the return rate on the filter.
- Reset the pump and the filter manually.
- raise the water level.
Above is a picture of our running betta tank. Hopefully, you can see all rubber holdings clips and suction cups. With the water level above the equipment and wires clipped out the way.
Also, something else to check that can be of concern. The tank is too close to a wall or unit and vibrating.
What’s Making Noise
This is a real fault-finding mission. If nothing stands out and you have had a good look for any debris. Checked inlet pipes for any food that may be stuck.
Had a look at tubes. And made sure all equipment and wires are locked down and tied up out of the way. Then the only thing we can do as hobbyists is to manually check everything one item at a time.
Ie switch one item off and check if the noise stops or not. This process may take a while but in the end, it’s the only way to be sure!.
Tanks Equipment Making Noise?
As discussed earlier the tank itself is likely not the culprit. The equipment is much more likely the culprit. From filters making noises.
Water pumps heaters waterfalls and the list goes on so let us have a look at possible equipment noises!.
- FILTER MAKING NOISE
- WATER PUMP MAKING NOISE
- HEATER NOISES
- HOW TO REDUCE WATERFALL NOISE
Starting with the filter. We need to handle the filter and check if we can hear any noise. Via holding we can feel vibrations or any change in sound. First, we need to both wash our hands and wear gloves if possible!.
Now check the inlet-outlet tubing. Make sure it’s fully inserted also check with a gentle shake if anything is rattling and may be worth fixing.
If a loose part or wire but chances are if it’s rattling about we need a new part. Take no chances as it’s, of course, important to have proper working equipment.
Similarly, with both the water pump heater and extra items such as waterfalls and bubblers. We can check hoses pipes tubes, and wires and make sure all are correctly connected.
Make sure hoses/tubes are sealed no cracks or breaks no debris but ultimately there’s a lifespan on all equipment.
We may well have to replace parts completely as we go its an unfortunate part of the hobby we love!. Spend the money for the best results buy the best don’t be cheap in my experience things work out better this way.
Conclusion
Fish tanks themselves don’t make noise without all this modern equipment!. Take a tank without filtration and or pumps or your cold water goldfish tank.
They make no noise. It is indeed as shown hopefully within this post. The culprit for any noise is the equipment that we use to make our life as hobbyists easier.
In closing, I would say spend the extra money on the best equipment. As the tank will likely run super quiet and the fish will definitely love you for it thanks for reading!.
